Artist in Focus

This is the first of an occasional series featuring artists we know and love.

The first of the series, of course, has to be Ruth Issett, an artist with whom we have had a long and very happy relationship - once described as symbiotic, much to Ruth's amusement!   We've shared so many experiences over the years (about twenty-five) - not to mention the odd tipple or two - and we have seen Ruth develop from one of the driving forces of Adult Education in Kent, to an internationally acclaimed artist.
Until recently Ruth would work with us demonstrating at the major shows, where the evenings could be very 'jolly' as Ruth is rarely short of an hilarious anecdote.   We have also come to know Ruth and her growing family (at last count six grandchildren, soon to be seven) as really good and valued friends so even though Ruth no longer demonstrates for us (so many commitments here and abroad) we are sure the relationship will continue.

Ruth Issett
Artist & Tutor

Ruth has had a long association with Art Van Go, starting from the early days of the art supplies van and also working with endless media, at numerous shows around the country on the Art Van Go stands.

With a B.A in Fashion/Textiles-Embroidery, from Birmingham Art College, Ruth’s teaching over the last 30 years has covered textile art widely with embroidery, printed and dyed textiles and design, mainly focusing on City & Guilds Creative Studies courses. Many of those years were in Ashford, Kent which became a particularly vibrant centre for Adult Education. In more recent years she regularly taught near Seattle USA, as well as teaching throughout the UK, Europe and in Australia.

Ruth is now living in rural Shropshire, where she enjoys working in her studio, looking out over inspirational countryside, creating vibrant textile art pieces, incorporating dyeing, print and stitch, for exhibitions throughout the U.K. She teaches periodically at Moor Hall in the workshop studio of her friend Bobby Britnell in Bettws-y-Crwyn, Shropshire, and occasionally at Art Van Go (see Nov 2015 workshop listing).

A member and current Chair of the Textile Study Group, Ruth is also a member of the exhibiting group Prism which regularly exhibits textile art in London. She has twice exhibited as one of the invited artists for the Knitting and Stitching Shows in Birmingham, London, Dublin and Harrogate.
