Mawata caps made from silk cocoons. These silk mawata caps have been made from many silk cocoons that have been simmered in hot water to remove the gum of the cocoon. Each individual cocoon is then stretched over a frame, (bamboo), in the rough shape of knitted wool hat. The word mawata is roughly translated from Japanese and means to spread or spread about. These mawata caps can now be used for hand spinning, where the individual layers of the silk are teased away from each other.
Also why not try making bowls out of mawata caps, some gorgeous creations can be made and using Jacquard Acid dyes the results can be absolutely stunning.
