Transferiez

PLEASE NOTE!

Warning: Isopropyl alcohol and TRANSFERIEZ™ Solution are flammable. Store and use these products only in a well ventilated area away from heat or ignition sources. Label all containers and store away from children and pets.

Handle with care. Spills are slippery. Store working brushes and tools in a tightly closed container with 91% isopropyl alcohol. DO NOT use this product with food utensils or store with food. Wear gloves for protection when using product.

Caution: Never pour TRANSFERIEZ™ Solution down the drain. If it comes into contact with water a thick gel will result that will clog plumbing drains. To dispose of unused TRANSFERIEZ™ Solution, pour it onto an absorbent material in a well ventilated outdoor area and allow to dry completely. Dispose of the dried material with other solid waste. Leave the TRANSFERIEZ™ Solution container open until completely dry and then discard, along with the dried brush. Do not attempt to wash and save used containers or brushes. Make sure they are completely dry and then discard.

To Make the Transferiez Solution:

SHAKE WELL. Add 15ml of TRANSFERIEZ™ Concentrate into 112ml of 91% isopropyl alcohol Transferiez Dilutant. IMPORTANT: Add the TRANSFERIEZ to the isopropyl alcohol in a leak-proof glass container and then leave for several hours (agitating occasionally) to dissolve and form a clear slightly viscous solution.  Store tightly closed.

How to do an Image Transfer with inkAID Transferiez

  • Before beginning, read through all instructions, caution and warning statements.
  • Make sure the area is well-ventilated and do not work near a source of heat or ignition. Wear eye protection and gloves and, if you have a sensitivity to isopropyl alcohol, an appropriate respirator.
  • Set up your work area on a smooth, level surface with a non-porous material on top such as a 10 mil thick high density polyethylene sheet available from home improvement stores. It’s an easy surface to clean and thick enough to last over many projects. You will also need a plastic cutting mat (available from local store) or carrier sheet (available from inkAID) cut to the appropriate size when working with porous substrates like paper, cheesecloth, canvas, or other fabrics.
  • Make sure the surface of your receptive substrate is clean. Remove any lint from your brushes with a taped lint remover.
  • Make sure your receptive substrate is secured to your work surface. If necessary, tape it down with good quality (3M) masking or blue painters tape.
  • Start with small sized pieces to become familiar with the process and how the materials perform.

Image Transfer to Canvas

Materials Needed:

  • Digital image, printed in reverse, on inkAID Transfer Film. The use of pigment inks is preferred. Dye based inks can be used but are subject to fading and may spread laterally during the transfer process.
  • Organic Cotton canvas sheet, 9.2 oz./sq. yard.
  • TransferiezTM Solution. Made up the day before.

Tools Needed:

  • Safety Equipment
  • Smooth work surface
  • Cutting mat or carrier sheet, trimmed to appropriate size
  • Foam brush (3 to 4 inches wide)
  • Princeton Catalyst Wedge No. 6 or brayer

Transferring an image to canvas

1. Place the cutting mat or carrier sheet on your work surface. Secure the top and bottom edges of the canvas to this with tape. Remove any lint from the foam brush with a taped lint remover.

2. To insure proper placement of your image, place the imaged transfer film on the dry canvas and visually line up the image. Remove the film from the canvas and set it to the side.

3. Now apply the TransferiezSolution to the canvas using the foam brush. Be sure to saturate the canvas but do not leave any visible clots of solution on the surface.

4. Immediately place the transfer film, image side down, on the wet surface of the canvas. Using your hands, gently push the film down so that it comes into complete contact with the canvas. For large pieces, you can use paint roller with 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch nap. Then, using the straight edge of the Princeton Catalyst Wedge or a brayer, push the film into the canvas from top to bottom in continuous movements using moderate pressure. Wait 3 minutes. Caution: Don’t press too hard as this may cause the film to move and cause the image to shift laterally.

5. During the 3 minutes, secure the left and right edges of the canvas with tape so that movement is limited as you remove the film.

6. At the end of 3 minutes, carefully pick up the top edge of the transfer film and in one continuous motion carefully roll the film back towards yourself and off of the canvas. When working with large pieces it may be easier to start by lifting one corner.

7.Remove the tape from the edges of the canvas and move the transferred image to another plastic sheet to dry. Allow to dry completely, overnight or a day or two, before applying any other materials

This process can be used with almost any fabric. Test, explore, and be creative!

Image Transfer to Aluminum

Materials Needed:

  • Digital image, printed in reverse, on inkAID Transfer Film. The use of pigment inks is preferred. Dye based inks can be used but are subject to fading and may spread laterally during the transfer process.
  • Citra-Solv (or other citrus cleaner), dilute mixture of Dawn dishwashing liquid and water, 70% isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning aluminum only).
  • Aluminum sheet
  • Transferiez Solution. Made up the day before.

Tools Needed:

  • Safety Equipment
  • Smooth work surface
  • Foam brush (3 to 4 inches wide)
  • Foam paint roller

Transferring an image to Aluminum

1. The finishing oils on the aluminum need to be removed. Begin by spraying Citra-solv on the sheet and clean off with paper towels or lint free cloth. Repeat until towels are clean. Next, wash the surface with the dilute dishwashing detergent and dry. Finally, apply a small amount of 70% isopropyl alcohol to a towel and wipe off the surface.

2. Place the aluminum sheet on your work surface. Make sure it lays flat. If necessary, you can secure the aluminum by applying tape on the back of the sheet. Remove any lint from the foam brush with a taped lint remover.

3. To insure proper placement of your image, place the imaged transfer film on the dry aluminum and visually line up the image. Remove the film from the aluminum and set it to the side.

4. Now apply the Transferiez Solution to the aluminum using the foam brush. Apply enough to make the surface wet but not running off the edges of the sheet. Do not leave any visible clots of solution on the surface.

5. Immediately place the transfer film, image side down, on the wet surface of the aluminum. Using your hands, gently push the film down so that it comes into complete contact. Use care, the transfer film will be slippery and will move around on the surface of the metal if you push too hard and cause the image to shift laterally. If needed, you can tape down one edge of the transfer film. Now take the foam paint roller and gently roll over the entire surface of the film. Wait 3 minutes.

6. At the end of 3 minutes, carefully pick up the top edge of the transfer film and in one continuous motion carefully roll the film back towards yourself and off of the aluminum. When working with large pieces it may be easier to start by lifting one corner.

7. Allow to dry completely, overnight or a day or two, before applying any other materials

This process can be used with any metal including stainless steel, copper, and brass. Test, explore, and be creative!
