inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating provides a clear, gloss surface that allows the underlying surface to show through. Printed images are clear and vibrant, with deep blacks. It contains an adhesive material that provides very good adhesion to non-porous materials such as aluminum, copper, metal foil, marble and plastics such as Mylar, Lexan, Plexiglas, and Acetate. It can also be used on porous materials such as watercolor and printmaking papers, Japanese rice paper and other handmade and specialty papers, fabrics, canvas, wallpaper, and wood veneer. Non-porous surfaces require one heavy coat while porous materials will need a light to moderate coating applied. inkAID Clear Gloss Type II is not water resistant. If the print is to be top coated use only solvent based top coatings and varnishes.
inkAID Clear Gloss Type II Coating…
Is an actual ink jet receptive coating. You can coat paper, fabric, canvas, film, plastic, metal and practically anything that will go through your printer. This is the same coating found on commercially produced clear, gloss ink jet media.
Provides excellent print quality. It produces clear, vibrant colors with deep blacks.
Has very good adhesion to metals that are properly prepared to accept water based coatings.
Will not add a significant amount of thickness to your media. Materials coated with inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating will go through your printer just like any other material.
Is water based and very safe to use. It's in the same category as water based latex house paint. As with any coating, remember to use with adequate ventilation. Review the Material Safety Data Sheet for more information.
Using inkAID Clear Gloss Type II Coating
All inkAID coatings work best at 70F – 80F, from initial stirring to application.
inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating cleans up with water, even after drying. Wear appropriate clothing and work in area suitable for painting.
Gently, but thoroughly, stir inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating from the bottom using a clean spautal or spoon before use.
Never work directly from the container. Always pour a working amount of inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating into another clean container.
Make sure all of your tools and brushes are clean and dry before beginning work.
Store inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating in a cool, dry environment above 50F. Never allow the coating to freeze.
The final appearance of your print will depend on how much coating is on the surface of your material. This, in turn, depends upon the material itself and how much inkAID coating is applied. Porous materials like paper, fabric, and canvas will absorb the coating, drawing it away from the surface. Non-porous materials like film, plastic, and metal will leave all the inkAID coating on the surface. Even a thin layer of inkAID will provide detail and sharpness to your print. As you increase the amount of inkAID applied, the print will become sharper and clearer with brighter and more intense colors.
When printing on non-porous materials such as metal and film keep in mind that the Clear Gloss Type II coating has the job of absorbing the ink and so a heavy coat of Clear Gloss Type II is required.
Make sure the material you want to print on is the correct thickness for your printer. Consult the manufacturer’s specifications.
inkAID Coatings will impart a stiffer hand to fabrics and lighter weight papers.
Applying inkAID Clear Gloss Type II Coating
Always work with clean tools and brushes.
Stir inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating gently, but thoroughly, from the bottom of the container. Transfer a working amount of coating into another clean container.
You can apply inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating with a foam brush, bristle brush, coating rod and by spraying. Foam brushes apply a smoother, less textured coating layer than bristle brushes. Brush applications also provide a more random, textured appearance while rod coating and spraying methods provide a thicker, more uniform and smoother, application.

When using a brush, especially on porous materials, apply the coating in smooth, even strokes in one direction completely covering the material. Then, while still wet, apply a second coating perpendicular to the first coating. When coating non-porous materials apply one heavy coating layer so that there is enough wet coating to flow and level by itself. If a little coating flows off the edges you’re doing it correctly.
Porous materials, such as paper, may curl and bend as the coating is applied. To minimize this fasten down the material using de-tackified blue painters tape before coating. You can de-tackify the tape by pressing it several times against your clothing. This minimizes the chance of tearing the coated material when removing it.
Allow the coating to dry completely before printing. inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating usually dries in several hours depending upon the amount applied and ambient temperature and humidity.
Porous materials, such as paper, may have some curl in them after coating and will need to be flattened before going through the printer. Small sheets can be flattened by running the material over the edge of a desk, placing it under several books with wax paper covering the coated side, or using a heat press. Larger sheets can be “reverse rolled” (coated side out) onto a large diameter (6+ inches) cardboard tube to remove curl and smooth them out.
A Few Tips About Printing
To coat and print on lightweight fabrics and papers you’ll need to use a “Carry Sheet”. A carry sheet actually carries lightweight coated materials through the printer that cannot go through by themselves. Here's a demonstration of how to set up Carry Sheet in Photoshop.
What print setting should you use with inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating? Start by using the same print setting as you would for gloss ink jet media (Remember, you're printing on the same coating!).
Photoshop, among other programs, provides an almost unlimited ability to dial in just the right color settings for your coating/substrate selection.
Post Print Coatings and Other Enhancements
When printing metals and other non-porous materials allow 2 - 3 days, depending upon ambient humidity and temperature, for the print to dry before applying top coatings.
inkAID Clear Gloss Type II coating can only be post coated ("top coated") with solvent based top coatings such as Golden Artist Colors MSA Varnish. Do not use water based top coatings on inkAID Clear Gloss Type II as they will dissolve the coating and the print.
