Hand carved wood blocks are made by highly skilled workers who have mastered this art which has come down generations.
Indian hand carved wood blocks can be made from various kinds of hard wood like teak, shesham, holly etc. The very first step is to plane the block of wood to a very smooth and flat finish as this helps in getting a good pattern and impression on stamping. The next step is to trace the pattern on paper and transfer it to the wood block. Lamp black oil and chalk are most commonly used in this process.
The skilled carver begins carving out the wood around the heavier or thicker portions of the design. The fine and more delicate areas of the design are done last of all so as to avoid any damage to the pattern during the carving process.
During the entire process of carving the wood block is kept damp using damp cloth. Keeping the wood moist helps avoid the wood breaking/chipping if kept too dry.
Once the entire pattern has been carved, the block is given delicate sanding with a light hand to rub off the coarse/sharp edges. Then to finish the block and reveal the design, white paint is carefully applied to the pattern.
