 Drawing Music

 Tues 6th Feb

 Two Day Workshop

 Wed 7th Feb

 Tutor: Debbie Lyddon

debbie lyddon drawing music (1) web

A workshop that gives you the opportunity to explore your creativity with sound, line, shape, colour, texture and silence. Pick up a paintbrush and listen to both live and recorded music to release your imagination and inventiveness.

To help you to create your own visualisations of sound you will do exercises that pay particular attention to the shared language of art and music and look at artists such as Vassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee who found inspiration from music.

Listening both to Debbie playing the flute and to other recorded music, you will interpret the music as visual mark making with free, abstract drawings in both wet and dry media. You will look specifically at line, shape, colour, texture and silence, relating each concept to a particular piece of classical music. Each exercise will include quick experimental drawing and there will also be the opportunity to produce more detailed drawings. The emphasis will be on creating loose, expressive work to introduce a more relaxed style to your mark making.

 Text in Textiles

 Weds 21st Feb

 Two Day Workshop

 Thurs 22nd Feb

 Tutor: Julia Triston

Text on Textiles

This two day ‘Text in Textiles’ workshop will involve stitching letters and/or words onto collaged backgrounds using upcycled materials.  The content of the pieces may be personal (a special memory, an important poem, a specific name) or an abstract reference (a symbol, a series of disrupted characters, an exploration of one letter in contrasting styles).  The texts may include imagery to support the sentiment expressed if appropriate.

Techniques will include layering, collaging, appliqué, printing, hand and machine embroidery, and working with dissolvable fabrics.  There will be an opportunity to produce a series of smaller samples, or to work on one in more depth as a resolved textile; all pieces will develop their own narrative.

 Wintry Landscapes

 Fri 9th Mar

 Tutor: Nodeen Salmon

Wintery Landscape machine embroidery 06 (5)-003The ‘Wintry Landscape’ workshop is all about machine stitching techniques, with no painted background. To keep it simple, calico is used as the canvas for our thread painting.

The colour of the landscape in winter can be spectacular on a sunny day, with lots of contrasts, but on a dull day it can be soft and muted with hardly any intensity. The vegetation in winter is beautiful too; think of silver birches to dried bleached grasses of different colours to those reds and autumn colour plants that thrive in winter. During this workshop you will make a landscape of wintery grasses using machine embroidery threads in whites, ochre moss greens, pale lilacs and muted pale blues with a little muted pale yellow to create a soft landscape.

Working on natural calico allows you to fully enjoy all the benefits of colour in thread-painting - it’s like choosing from a box of crayons with calico as the paper to draw on.   You will start by setting the scene looking at your inspiration and what aspect of it appeals to you. You will then be drawing with the sewing machine to create your landscape. This will involve careful selection of your colours, using light, medium and dark tones.   Nodeen normally likes to work with bright colours, so this is all about toning down the intensity to suit the subject matter

The workshop is suitable for all those who have a basic understanding of their sewing machine, whether you are a beginner or advanced.

 Quietly Composed

 Tues 1st May

 Two Day Workshop

 Wed 2nd May

 Tutor: Amanda Clayton

nat forms.1 webThe course ‘Quietly Composed’ is aimed at those artists, embroiderers in particular, who wish to explore observational starting points and develop ideas through cloth and stitch.   Amanda believes that stripping work down to bare formal elements can help to understand ourselves, especially our like and dislikes, and develop our individual visual language. Some embroiderers feel they have to draw but do not necessarily know why. This course will show you how to ‘draw for a reason’. It will also open a dialogue of ‘what is drawing?’
“I have strong philosophies about linking paper and cloth qualities, also mark and stitch.   From the feedback I have after delivering a course I know that students have said how links and connections are made with their work and themselves…the course is not about producing one piece of work but reinforcing a work process that you will revisit constantly afterwards.”

 Conjuring Colours and Textures

 Thurs 24th May

 Two Day Workshop

 Fri 25th May

 Tutor: Christine Chester

IMG_2952 (1) 2 webWorking with Procion MX dyes you will learn to create colourfully textured and patterned fabrics when using immersion dyeing techniques. You will prepare fabrics for bucket dyeing in a variety of ways including wrapping bamboo sticks, scrunching fabric round a ‘pole’, stitching patterns into fabric, clamping fabric between shapes and other resist techniques which are now referred to under the umbrella heading of ‘shibori’.

Day 1 will be spent working with colour; single colours in buckets and multiple colours in tray dyeing. You will learn how to mix the dyes for the different techniques and the different ways the 'fix' is introduced into the two processes. Of course, there is always a downside to working with dye and textiles, so the end of the day, inevitably, will be spent – rinsing!!!

Day 2 will focus on overdyeing fabrics from the first set of buckets on Day 1.   Meanwhile new fabric will be wrapped in a mandala type method to create strong patterns in different colours.
Throughout all of this, you will be guided as to colour choices and ways of mixing particular colours. You may choose to make a colour notebook from the range of dyes available for use in some of the spare moments whilst dyes are steeping and before the rinsing.

Through these techniques you will create exciting patterns and textures on fabrics. You also learn to combine colours by overdyeing in buckets or, working with primary and secondary colours, creating blends and mixes in one container. Simple colour mixing theory relating to dyes and how these differ from the behaviour of pigments in paint is also included, as well as how to choose the materials and techniques to create particular types of marks in fabrics and how to control the application of colour to a range of fabrics and textures.
The course will cover safe management and maintenance of working area when using Procion MX dyes and all related ingredients.

 Painting Landscapes with Pastels

 Wed 13th June

 Tutor: Vanessa Bryson

Soft pastel sticks are used to produce a painting that has blended colours that has a generally softer outline and feel than using pencil or brush and paints.  Soft pastels come in multiple colours and can be blended together to produce nuanced shades and textures.  The colours for landscape paintings in pastels generally use a green, blue, ochre, and lavender palette.  Multiple greens are used since the British landscape tends towards many different shades of green. White and light colours are used for highlights, but generally black is never used.
The goal of this workshop is to teach you how to use this medium to produce a finished painting at the end of the day which will have been taken from a photograph.  By the end of the workshop you should be able to feel comfortable producing art work on your own using soft pastels and also learn about the different types and brands of paper used for soft pastels.   Pastels can be a bit messy (just powdery/dusty) so apron or overall is recommended but hands are easily cleaned with soap and water, or baby wipes.  Fixative is used to fix the pastel to the paper.

2013 - Meltingly Beautiful Beads 003.1 webThis is a great course for all levels of expertise.  It is designed to inspire you to make beautiful beads with a difference, so that these can be manipulated and interpreted to suit your own individual artwork. This could be for just jewellery making, but the primary intention is to explore the potential for incorporating these beads into textile art and mixed media projects.

Inspiration can be approached in two ways:-
1) The beads themselves may promote inspiration for a piece of work, or
2) A piece of artwork may be substantially enhanced by creating the correct style of bead to suit it.

A wide range of materials will be used:-
Organza fabric – for forming lovely textured and often very organic looking beads and structures to enhance backgrounds.
Metallic Organza – combining this with felt and soldering iron techniques.
Angelina Fibre and Film – combined with Kunin felt, and we will be adding rubber stamping techniques.
Cellophane/cake/sweet wrappers – (a recycling WOW!!!), to create unusual and stunning beads and backgrounds.
PVA Glue – this was a ‘Eureka’ moment, and you won’t believe how easy it is.
Metal Fabric – Metal Fabric is very pliable, and can be distressed very easily and moulded into lovely beads.
